Pakistan Labour Ministry Recommends Rs45,000 Minimum Wage for Next Financial Year

The Ministry of Labour and Manpower has proposed raising the national minimum wage to Rs45,000 per month for the upcoming financial year 2026-27, marking a significant increase aimed at addressing rising living costs and inflation.

According to official sources, the recommendation was finalised during recent consultations with provincial governments and labour representatives. If approved by the federal cabinet and implemented, the new minimum wage would represent a substantial uplift from the current rate, providing relief to millions of low-paid workers across the country.

“The government remains committed to ensuring a decent standard of living for the working class,” a senior ministry official said. “This proposed increase takes into account the prevailing inflation trends, particularly in food, housing, and transportation sectors.”

Labour unions have welcomed the move, describing it as a long-overdue step. However, some industry associations have expressed concerns over the potential impact on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), warning that a sharp hike could lead to higher operational costs and possible job losses if not paired with supportive measures for businesses.

The final decision on the minimum wage is expected to be announced in the federal budget for FY2026-27, scheduled to be presented in the coming weeks. Provincial governments will also align their respective wage notifications accordingly once the federal benchmark is set.
