Islamabad (Radio Pakistan) — April 4, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a major reduction in petroleum costs, lowering petrol prices by Rs80 per liter through a cut in the petroleum levy, bringing the new price to Rs378 per liter from Rs458.

Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister said the relief measure would remain effective for one month and was aimed at easing economic pressure caused by rising global oil prices amid ongoing regional instability.

He stated that international fuel markets had been severely affected by conflict in the Middle East, adding that “oil prices are skyrocketing due to war in the Middle East and it has engulfed Pakistan as well.”

Government Measures to Ease Economic Pressure

The Prime Minister said the government had absorbed significant financial costs to shield citizens from global price shocks. According to him, approximately Rs129 billion from national resources had been utilized over the past three weeks to prevent the full burden of international price increases from being transferred to consumers.

He emphasized that “the government has made every effort to alleviate the public’s hardships using national resources.”

As part of austerity efforts, members of the federal cabinet will now forego their salaries for six months — an extension of an earlier two-month decision — with the funds redirected to the national exchequer.

Alongside the fuel price reduction, the government introduced a targeted subsidy programme designed to support vulnerable sectors affected by higher transportation costs.

Under the initiative:

• Motorbike owners will receive a subsidy of Rs100 per liter.
• Small trucks will receive Rs70,000 monthly assistance.
• Large trucks will receive Rs80,000 per month.
• Passenger buses will receive Rs100,000 monthly support.

The Prime Minister also announced that economy-class railway fares would remain unchanged to protect lower-income travellers from additional financial strain.

The relief measures will be implemented across all provinces, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, with the federal government providing required financial resources.

Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged cooperation from provincial leadership and credited coordinated national efforts involving civil and military institutions, including Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, for supporting regional stability initiatives.

Calling the current economic situation one of the country’s most serious challenges, the Prime Minister said national unity and coordinated policymaking were essential to restoring stability and protecting livelihoods.

He concluded by pledging continued government efforts to normalize economic conditions and reduce the financial burden on ordinary citizens amid volatile global energy markets.
