Police impose restrictions ahead of NC march in Srinagar, Jammu

Indian authorities imposed stringent restrictions on Wednesday on several roads leading to the BJP headquarters in Jawahar Nagar, Srinagar, and Jammu ahead of a proposed protest march by the National Conference.

Large contingents of Indian police and paramilitary personnel were deployed across Jawahar Nagar, Raj Bagh, Wazir Bagh and adjoining areas in Srinagar as part of stepped-up arrangements.

Vehicles approaching Jawahar Nagar were stopped at multiple barricades and prevented from moving towards the BJP office, causing severe traffic disruptions on connecting roads in surrounding residential and commercial areas.

The restrictions were put in place ahead of the National Conference’s call for gherao of BJP headquarters in Srinagar and Jammu. The party is demanding the restoration of statehood and political identity and integrity of Jammu and Kashmir.

The BJP has also announced its own protest programme for the day, with activities by both parties expected to heighten political tensions in the two cities. Officials said the heavy police deployment and traffic curbs were imposed to prevent any confrontation.

Local residents and commuters complained of inconvenience due to the sudden restrictions and diversion of traffic without prior notice.
