Protesters Attempt to Storm US Embassy Compound in Baghdad’s Green Zone

Iraq: Hundreds of demonstrators, many aligned with pro-Iran Shia groups, tried to breach Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone early Sunday, where the United States Embassy is located, following the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes.

Security sources told AFP that the protesters’ repeated attempts to enter the zone had been thwarted so far, though crowds continued pressing forward. Iraqi forces deployed tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, who were seen throwing stones at security lines. Videos circulating on social media showed clashes near entry points, including barriers on bridges leading into the Green Zone, with smoke and irritants visible in the air.

While some unverified social media posts and videos claimed the embassy had been fully “overrun” or that thousands had flooded inside, mainstream reports from outlets including Reuters, AFP, and Al Arabiya indicate the crowds have not succeeded in breaching the main embassy compound itself. Clashes remain confined to outer perimeters and access routes, with no confirmed reports of protesters entering core embassy buildings, widespread fires within the facility, or US personnel evacuations as of the latest updates.

The situation is fluid, with ongoing demonstrations in southern Iraq provinces as well.
