Punjab Government Slashes Traffic Fines in Major Relief Move

The Punjab government has approved a significant reduction in traffic violation fines (challans) across various vehicle categories, offering financial relief to commuters, especially motorcyclists and daily wage earners.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz gave the nod to a summary submitted by the DIG Traffic Punjab on April 15, 2026. The proposal will now be tabled in the Punjab Assembly for formal approval, after which the revised penalties will come into effect.

The decision comes months after a sharp increase in fines earlier in 2025-26, which had drawn criticism for burdening ordinary citizens. Officials say the rollback aims to ease the load while maintaining road safety discipline. Fines for overspeeding on motorcycles, rickshaws, and cars will remain unchanged.

Reductions in the New Penalty Structure:

– Motorcycles: General fine reduced from Rs2,000 to Rs1,000 (maximum Rs2,000).

– Rickshaws: Fine cut from Rs3,000 to Rs1,000.

– Cars and Jeeps: Penalty lowered from Rs5,000 to Rs3,000.

– Serious violations: Fixed at Rs2,000.

– 2,000cc and luxury vehicles: Fine reduced from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000 (range: Rs2,000 to Rs10,000).

– Light vehicles (Mazda, coaster, small vans): Cut from Rs20,000 to Rs7,000.

– Heavy vehicles (buses, trucks): Reduced from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000.

Other Proposed Changes:

– Helmet not worn: Reduced from Rs2,000 to Rs1,000.

– Underage driving: Lowered from Rs5,000 to Rs2,500.

– Signal jumping: Cut from Rs1,000 to Rs500.
