Sergio Gor Expected to Arrive in New Delhi in Mid-January to Assume Role as US Ambassador to India

Sergio Gor, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, is set to arrive in the Indian capital in mid-January 2026 to take charge as the United States Ambassador to India, sources familiar with the matter told reporters on Tuesday.

Gor, who serves as a special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs in addition to his ambassadorship, was nominated by Trump in August 2025 and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in October. He was sworn in during a ceremony at the White House in November but has yet to present his credentials in New Delhi.

In the interim, the U.S. Embassy in India has been managed by the Chargé d’Affaires, following the departure of former Ambassador Eric Garcetti in January 2025 at the end of his term.

Ahead of Gor’s arrival, the embassy is reportedly undergoing staff changes and preparations for the transition.

The appointment of Gor, described by Trump as a “great friend” with his full trust, comes at a time of evolving U.S.-India relations, including ongoing trade negotiations amid earlier tensions over tariffs.

Gor, 39, is one of the youngest U.S. ambassadors to India and brings a background in Republican politics and close ties to the Trump administration rather than traditional diplomatic experience.
