Of Pakistani origin with roots in Kashmir, Mahmood, a former barrister known for her tough stance on immigration, including proposals to extend settlement periods, is positioned on the party’s more socially conservative wing.

If Mahmood were to replace Starmer, she would make history as the United Kingdom’s first Muslim prime minister and the first of Pakistani heritage to hold the office. Bookmakers currently place her odds around 9/1 (roughly 10% probability), behind figures like Angela Rayner and Wes Streeting, though she is seen as a strong contender capable of bridging party factions and appealing to certain voter bases.

The crisis highlights broader challenges for Starmer’s leadership, including internal dissent, falling approval ratings, and competition from a resurgent far-right in polls. While no leadership challenge has formally materialized, requiring backing from at least 20% of Labour MPs, the Epstein-linked scandal continues to fuel intense speculation in Westminster.
