India: Powerful gusts and heavy rainfall lashed Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday evening, displacing ground support equipment and causing it to collide with three parked Air India narrowbody aircraft at Terminal 2.

The incident occurred around 4:40 p.m. local time during a sudden spell of severe weather, which featured strong winds and reduced visibility on the tarmac. Video footage from the scene shows ground staff navigating the stormy conditions as high winds pushed vehicles and equipment across the apron.

According to airport authorities, ground handling equipment belonging to Air India Engineering and IndiGo shifted from their positions due to the gusts, striking the three parked planes. No injuries were reported among staff or passengers.

All three affected aircraft have been withdrawn from service for detailed engineering inspections and repairs. The extent of the damage has not yet been fully disclosed, and operations at the terminal faced temporary disruptions as safety checks were carried out.

The event highlights the challenges posed by Delhi’s intense pre-monsoon or early monsoon weather bursts, which can generate microburst-like conditions capable of impacting ground operations.

Authorities have initiated a probe into the incident. Flights continued after the weather eased, though some passengers experienced delays amid the assessment process.
