Florida (The Guardian) — June 29, 2026: Scientists have identified a tiny Antarctic marine organism that could contribute to the development of future treatments for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. While the findings are encouraging, researchers caution that the work remains in its early stages and is far from becoming an approved treatment.

A research team from the University of South Florida (USF) recently completed a six-week scientific expedition in Antarctica, where they collected samples of ascidians—commonly known as sea squirts. These marine invertebrates contain bacteria that naturally produce defensive toxins, which scientists believe may have significant medical applications.

According to the researchers, laboratory studies have shown that the bacterial compound successfully destroyed melanoma cells in mice while leaving the animals unharmed. However, the team emphasized that much more research is required before the compound can be considered for use in humans.

Professor Bill Baker, who is leading the research, said, “The good news is it didn’t kill the mice. It did kill their cancer, so we know it has the physiological properties to act like a drug.” He added that the next phase involves producing sufficient quantities of the compound for larger animal studies before any human trials can begin.

The expedition also improved scientists’ understanding of how the cancer-fighting bacteria live inside the Antarctic organisms, knowledge that could help researchers reproduce the compound synthetically instead of harvesting large numbers of sea squirts from the fragile Antarctic ecosystem. Baker noted, “We cannot collect 1,000 basketball quantities from the Antarctic, that would destroy the ecology, so one of the things we have to do is figure out how to make this stuff in the lab.”

The challenging Antarctic mission involved divers operating in freezing waters at depths of up to 130 feet while navigating ice, limited visibility and marine wildlife. Scientists say the samples collected will now undergo extensive genetic, chemical and biological analysis in collaboration with multiple research institutions.

USF officials say the project builds on more than two decades of research into marine organisms and their potential pharmaceutical value. Researchers are working alongside partners, including the Desert Research Institute and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, to determine whether the naturally occurring compound can eventually be developed into a safe medicine.

Scientists also stressed that many promising laboratory discoveries do not ultimately become approved medicines. Before any treatment reaches patients, it must undergo rigorous safety assessments, expanded animal studies, regulatory review and multiple phases of human clinical trials.

The research nevertheless highlights the growing importance of biodiversity and marine ecosystems in biomedical discovery, with scientists continuing to explore natural compounds that may contribute to future therapies for cancer and other diseases.
