Tragedy Averted at Delhi Airport as Swiss Air Flight Aborts Takeoff Due to Engine Failure

India: A potential disaster was narrowly avoided at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday when a Swiss International Air Lines flight bound for Zurich aborted its takeoff after an engine failure, triggering smoke and fire alerts.

The incident involved flight SWR146 on Runway 28. Reports indicated smoke emanating from the left side of the aircraft and flames near the right landing gear, prompting the pilots to immediately halt the takeoff roll.

A full emergency was declared at the airport as a precautionary measure. The aircraft, carrying 232 passengers and 13 crew members, came to a safe stop on the runway. Passengers were quickly evacuated using emergency slides, with ground teams responding swiftly to secure the scene.

Four passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation and are receiving medical treatment. No serious harm was reported to others on board, and all individuals were accounted for.

The runway remained blocked for an extended period, causing disruptions to other flight operations. Airport authorities have launched an investigation into the engine failure, while the aircraft is expected to undergo thorough technical checks.
