The U.S. State Department announced it will release a limited number of specially designed U.S. passports to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence in July 2026.

The commemorative passports will feature President Donald Trump’s portrait on an inside cover, set against text from the Declaration of Independence, accompanied by his signature in gold and additional patriotic imagery, including depictions of the Founding Fathers.

State Department officials confirmed the plans, noting that the special passports will include customized artwork and enhanced imagery while retaining the same high-level security features as standard U.S. passports, widely regarded as among the most secure travel documents in the world.

The limited-edition passports will be available at no extra cost, though only in restricted quantities and primarily through the Washington Passport Agency. Applicants requesting the commemorative version there may receive one while supplies last. Routine passport applications at other agencies and online will continue to receive the standard design.

According to the department’s descriptions and mock-ups, one interior page prominently displays Trump’s portrait alongside the American flag and excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, paired with his gold signature. Another page features historical artwork related to the signing of the Declaration by the nation’s founders. This represents a departure from conventional U.S. passport designs, which have historically emphasized national landmarks, cultural symbols, and historical scenes rather than portraits of living presidents.

The announcement has sparked divided reactions. Supporters see it as a fitting patriotic tribute tied to the “America 250” celebrations, while critics have described the inclusion of a sitting president’s image on an official international travel document as unusual or self-promotional.

This initiative forms part of broader commemorative efforts for the nation’s semiquincentennial, which have included other items featuring Trump’s likeness. The special passports are expected to become available this summer as part of nationwide independence anniversary events.

Standard U.S. passports will remain unchanged in security features and validity, ensuring no impact on travelers who prefer the regular version. Exact production numbers for the limited-edition passports have not been disclosed.
