Putin Has No Plans to Attend 2026 G20 Summit in Miami

Russian President Vladimir Putin currently has no intention of personally attending the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled for December 2026 in Miami, Florida, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

Peskov’s statement comes as the United States prepares to host the annual gathering of the world’s major economies at Trump National Doral Miami.

Putin has not participated in person at a G20 summit since before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, having skipped subsequent meetings in Bali (2022), New Delhi (2023), Rio de Janeiro (2024), and Johannesburg (2025) amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and, in some cases, concerns related to an International Criminal Court arrest warrant issued against him.Unlike previous host nations that are ICC members, where legal risks could have influenced his absence, the United States is not a party to the ICC, eliminating any potential arrest threat during a U.S.-hosted event.

Observers suggest the decision reflects broader diplomatic strains, security considerations, or a strategic choice to avoid direct high-level confrontations with Western leaders rather than legal barriers.

The Kremlin has indicated Russia will instead send a high-level delegation to represent its interests, maintaining engagement in the forum while avoiding leader-level participation.The 2026 summit, set for December 14-15, marks the U.S. presidency of the G20 under President Donald Trump, who previously expressed openness to Putin attending, stating he would “love” for both Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to join if they wished. However, recent indications point to continued absences from both leaders for the Miami meeting.

Putin’s pattern of non-attendance has become a fixture at recent G20 summits, with Russia typically represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov or other senior officials. The Kremlin has emphasized that Moscow will continue to participate at an appropriate level to advance its positions on global economic and security issues.
