Sadia Irfan Appointed as Chief HR at Pakistan International Airlines Amid Post-Privatization Restructuring

In a significant leadership move at the newly privatized Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Sadia Irfan is set to assume the role of Chief Human Resources Officer (or equivalent senior HR leadership position) in the coming weeks.

Ms. Irfan, a seasoned HR professional with over 30 years of experience, is currently serving as the Group Human Resources Director at Fatima Group, the parent entity of Fatima Fertilizer Company Limited. Her tenure at Fatima Group, spanning approximately eight years, has been marked by transformative initiatives including achieving a record 91% Employee Engagement Index, spearheading gender diversity programs that boosted female executive representation to industry-leading levels, digitalizing HR processes for a paperless and data-driven environment.

Prior to joining Fatima Group, Ms. Irfan held senior HR roles at global multinationals such as PepsiCo and Nestlé, where she led strategic HR functions across West Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. At PepsiCo, she drove key successes including the Harvey Russell Award for Diversity & Inclusion, multiple “Best Place to Work” recognitions, and the highest-ever female board representation and employee engagement scores in the region.

This appointment comes at a pivotal time for PIA, following its majority stake acquisition in late 2025 by a consortium led by Arif Habib Limited, which includes Fatima Fertilizer (part of the Fatima Group), City Schools, and Lake City Holdings. The privatization deal, valued at approximately $482 million for a 75%+ stake, concluded after years of delays and is expected to see the new owners fully take operational control from April 2026 onward, injecting fresh capital and driving restructuring efforts.

Industry observers view the move as strategic, leveraging Ms. Irfan’s expertise in organizational transformation, talent management, and cultural change to support PIA’s revival amid workforce challenges, operational modernization, and post-privatization integration. Her background in MNC environments and recent success in a major Pakistani conglomerate closely tied to the new ownership group positions her well to lead HR reforms at the national flag carrier.
