Saudi Arabia Denies US Military Access to Bases and Airspace for Iran Operation

Saudi Arabia has refused to allow the United States to use its military bases and airspace for a planned operation related to Iran, dealing a significant setback to American efforts in the region, NBC News reported on May 6-7, 2026.

According to U.S. officials, Riyadh informed Washington that American aircraft would not be permitted to operate from Prince Sultan Air Base, a key facility southeast of Riyadh that hosts U.S. fighters, tankers, and air defense systems, nor fly through Saudi airspace to support the mission.

The decision came after President Donald Trump’s surprise announcement of Project Freedom”, a short-notice operation aimed at escorting merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened tensions with Iran. The move reportedly caught several Gulf allies off guard and angered Saudi leadership.

A subsequent phone call between Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman failed to resolve the impasse, leading the U.S. to temporarily pause the operation.

This development marks a notable shift. During earlier U.S. operations against Iran, including “Operation Epic Fury,” Saudi Arabia had granted access to the same base and airspace. Officials say the Kingdom is now prioritizing diplomatic de-escalation and is wary of actions that could trigger direct Iranian retaliation.

The pause gives time for possible diplomatic efforts with Iran, though senior U.S. officials described the Saudi position as a firm restriction on basing and overflight rights.
