On Friday, the Saudi Arabian authorities expressed “great concern” over airstrikes in Yemen and the Red Sea as tensions escalate in the region.

In a statement issued shortly after the US and the UK announced they had struck nearly a dozen targets used by the Houthis in Yemen, the Saudi Press Agency said: “While the Kingdom stresses the importance of preserving the security and stability of the Red Sea region, in which freedom of navigation is an international demand [and of] interest of the entire world, [Saudi Arabia] calls for restraint and avoiding escalation”.

According to US military claims, since November 19, the Houthis have reportedly attacked twenty-seven ships across the Red Sea region. Before the airstrikes in Yemen, the US and twelve other governments had cautioned the group to halt its attacks or face consequences.

Late Thursday, the US Air Force struck over sixty targets at sixteen “Iran-backed Houthi militant locations” as confirmed by a top commander in the Middle East. During the “retaliatory” attack, US officials conducted fighter jets, warships, and submarines but refrained from drone attacks.

Addressing the attack, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin maintained: “The United States maintains its right to self-defense and, if necessary, we will take follow-on actions to protect US forces”. Another official reportedly confirmed logistics facilities and radar systems were targeted. The senior official informed reporters, “We were going after very specific capabilities in very specific locations with precision munitions”.
