Shots Fired at White House Correspondents’ Dinner; President Trump Evacuated

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were quickly evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday night after reports of gunfire at the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C.

Secret Service agents rushed the president, first lady, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials from the ballroom as loud bangs consistent with gunshots echoed through the venue around 8:30 p.m. ET. Attendees ducked under tables amid the chaos. Trump and all protectees were reported uninjured.

Authorities say a 31-year-old suspect, identified as Cole Thomas Allen from Torrance, California, charged a security checkpoint near the main magnetometer screening area outside the ballroom while armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun, and knives. He fired shots during the confrontation but was apprehended on site and taken into custody. The incident did not reach the main ballroom where Trump was seated.

One Secret Service officer was struck by gunfire but was saved by a bulletproof vest and is expected to make a full recovery. No other serious injuries were immediately reported.

Trump later addressed reporters from the White House, praising the Secret Service’s rapid response. He described the suspect as a “sick person” and said the officer’s vest prevented a potentially fatal injury. Trump added that he does not believe the suspect is affiliated with any foreign group.

The annual event, a high-profile gathering of journalists, politicians, and celebrities, was disrupted shortly after it began. The dinner was effectively canceled following the evacuation and security lockdown.

The Secret Service and D.C. police described the matter as an active investigation, with the suspect appearing to be a lone actor. No motive has been publicly released.
