Somalia Declares Ban on Israeli-Linked Ships in Bab al-Mandeb Strait in Escalating Dispute Over Somaliland
Somalia’s government has announced a ban on Israeli-linked vessels passing through the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait, framing the move as a direct response to Israel’s recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland and the recent appointment of an Israeli ambassador there.
The declaration came through statements by Somali officials, including Ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union Abdullahi Mohamed Warfa. He warned that any external interference undermining Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty would face consequences, including restrictions on access to the key maritime route connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
The announcement follows Israel’s decision to formally recognize Somaliland, a self-declared independent entity in northern Somalia since 1991, and to name Michael Lotem as its first ambassador to the region. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has strongly condemned the Israeli outreach, describing it as a violation of Somalia’s unity and a threat to regional stability.
Somalia’s effective coastline primarily borders the Indian Ocean, far from the contested strait. Maritime traffic monitoring shows no immediate disruptions or changes in shipping patterns following the statement.
The development comes amid heightened tensions in the Red Sea region, already affected by Houthi attacks on vessels. Some pro-Iranian media outlets have highlighted the Somali announcement, while others note it risks further complicating Horn of Africa dynamics without enforceable power at sea.
