Pakistan beat West Indies by nine runs in second T20I

Oct 26, 2021: Ahead of today’s game between Pakistan and New Zealand, the Pakistan bowling coach Vernon Philander says he wants the players to “forget what happened” on Sunday, citing a 10-wicket victory over India, and focus on the upcoming T20 World Cup matches.

Talking to local news outlet, the News, the coach said, “Yes, it was a big win against India and I am excited to have such a big win in my first match as Pakistan’s bowling coach. We celebrated the victory on Sunday and that’s it. “I’ve told my players to forget what happened the other day and stay on the ground.”

Philander said the [win against India] was “just the beginning of a mega event”, adding that the players would need to focus more on the matches ahead. “We have to be prepared for tough matches before us, especially against New Zealand,” he said.

“Tuesday’s match is very important from Pakistan’s point of view as our focus is on our second outing. Hopefully, the boys will refocus their attention and get ready, ”he said.

When asked about the combination for today’s match, the bowling coach said he was not at liberty to talk about Pakistan’s combination for the match against New Zealand. “It’s all up to the captain and the coach to finalize the combination.”

Talking about the individual performances in the match with India, Philander said, Hassan Ali is a champion bowler. Flanders admitted that Ali had conceded too many runs, but said that in such a big match “someone has to go under the hammer”.

Commenting on the team’s bowling battery, he said “There were small boundaries which was also a reason for hitting fours and sixes. Overall, I think bowling was exceptional and that’s why we limited India to a low total,” he said.

The coach was full of praises for Shaheen Shah Afridi, saying “He is extraordinary as well as capable of making a difference. When you have a fast ball and the ability to move the ball in both directions, you are an asset to the team. Having such skills is always great. “His line was great last night. I just encourage him to do what he does for his country.”

The bowling coach also commented on Pakistan cricket team’s inconsistency problem, “This is something we as coaches as a team want to overcome. Hopefully, with the efforts of the coaches and the Pakistan Cricket Board [PCB], things are going in the right direction,” he said.

Overall Philander expressed hope that his commitment to the team would help Pakistan develop. I will try to help the bowlers to bowl to the best of their ability.
