Turkish F-16 Crashes into Trees During Low-Altitude Training Flight in Yalova; Pilot Ejects and Survives

A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed into trees and erupted in flames during a low-altitude training flight in northwestern Turkey’s Yalova province on August 12, 2026. The pilot successfully ejected and survived the incident.

The aircraft, assigned to a squadron from the 1st Main Jet Base in Eskişehir, was on a routine training mission near the 18th Main Jet Base Command in the Çiftlikköy district (Taşköprü area) when the crash occurred around 15:00 local time. Footage circulating online and in local media shows the jet flying extremely low, reportedly during a low pass that may have been intended as a salute to aviation personnel on the ground, before striking trees, impacting the ground, and bursting into flames with a plume of black smoke rising from the wooded area.

Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence confirmed the crash and stated that the pilot ejected safely. The pilot, identified in some reports as Staff Lieutenant Colonel E.T., was taken to Yalova Training and Research Hospital, where he was reported to be in good condition with no life-threatening injuries. Emergency services, including fire crews, AFAD disaster response teams, and medical units, responded promptly. No casualties or significant damage to civilian property on the ground were reported.

Yalova Governor Ahmet Hamdi Usta visited the site and noted that the aircraft came down immediately next to the military base in a non-residential area. An official investigation, including involvement from the Yalova Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, is underway to determine the cause. Authorities have not yet attributed the accident to any specific factor such as technical failure, pilot error, or other issues.

This marks another incident involving Turkey’s large F-16 fleet, which is one of the biggest operators of the type worldwide.
