US Attorney General orders investigation into alleged election irregularities

WASHINGTON: United States (US) Attorney General William Barr has ordered an investigation into alleged irregularities in the US Presidential Elections 2020.

According to the news agency, the US Attorney General has written a letter to all the prosecutors of the Justice Department, the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National Security Division to pursue “substantial allegations” of voting irregularities, if they exist, before the 2020 presidential election is certified, despite no evidence of widespread fraud.

“The election process is complete and we must reassure the American people that the election results reflect their aspirations,” the letter said.

It is believed that the 59th presidential election was held in the US and according to the results so far, Donald Trump’s rival and Democratic candidate Joe Biden has won with a clear victory and managed to get more than the required 270 votes of the Electoral College.

However, the current US President Trump has refused to accept the results and has announced to challenge in court. The results have been challenged in several states by Donald Trump’s campaign team, while judges in Michigan and Georgia have rejected such requests.

Last Friday, 39 Republican members of Congress wrote a letter to Attorney General William Barr urging him to use all possible means to investigate allegations of fraud. Experts say a legal battle by Donald Trump is unlikely to change the outcome of the presidential election.

Attorney General William Barr has told all prosecutors that the investigation should not be based on imaginary and weak allegations of electoral fraud and that the letter does not mean that the Justice Department has solid evidence of irregularities.
