US-India Interim Trade Deal Faces Uncertainty as New Delhi Pushes for Preferential Terms

The proposed interim trade agreement between the United States and India has reportedly run into significant uncertainty, with negotiations facing delays over key differences between the two sides. According to Baghi Tv report, New Delhi is seeking to secure favorable and largely one-sided trade concessions, while U.S. officials remain reluctant to proceed under the conditions being demanded by India.

Although both countries agreed on an initial framework for an interim trade arrangement in February 2026, the deal has yet to be finalized despite months of discussions. The prolonged delay has dealt a setback to expectations within the Indian government that Washington would grant India special trade preferences.

India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal stated on Thursday that New Delhi would only move forward with the proposed bilateral trade agreement if a framework is established that provides Indian exports with more favorable terms and lower tariffs than those offered to competing countries. However, there are currently no indications that the United States is prepared to offer such assurances.

Challenges facing Indian exports, particularly in the agricultural and information technology sectors, remain unresolved. The Indian television report noted that the slow pace of negotiations and persistent disagreements suggest that trade relations between the two countries are not progressing as expected.

Analysts believe that further delays in concluding the agreement could pose a challenge to India’s trade strategy and raise broader questions about the future direction of economic cooperation between Washington and New Delhi.
