WhatsApp Clarifies Upcoming ‘Username’ Feature Amid Privacy and Safety Concerns

WhatsApp on Thursday issued detailed clarifications regarding its much-anticipated ‘Username’ feature, aiming to address growing concerns over privacy, safety, and potential impersonation as users begin reserving their preferred handles ahead of a wider rollout later this year.

The messaging giant emphasized that the new feature is designed primarily to enhance user privacy by allowing people to connect and chat without sharing their phone numbers. Usernames will serve as optional unique identifiers, enabling users to initiate conversations or join groups without revealing personal contact details.

WhatsApp clarified that usernames will not be searchable, mirroring the platform’s current approach to phone numbers. This means users cannot be discovered simply by guessing or searching for common handles. The company also introduced additional safeguards, including a “Username Key” for extra protection against unsolicited messages.

To tackle impersonation risks, WhatsApp stated that usernames linked to celebrities, public figures, government organizations, and Meta Verified accounts will be permanently protected and reserved for their legitimate owners. Existing Instagram and Facebook usernames are also being reserved for their respective account holders.

Reservations for usernames opened recently, giving users an early opportunity to secure their preferred handles before the full feature launches gradually over the coming months. The update is expected to benefit over three billion WhatsApp users worldwide by offering greater control over their personal information.

However, the announcement has sparked discussions around potential misuse, with some experts and authorities highlighting risks of scams and fake profiles. WhatsApp assured that robust measures, including advanced scam detection tools, are in place to mitigate such threats.
