New Delhi: Indian Air Force (IAF) MiG-21 crash results in the death of the pilot. According to reports of the Indian media, this is the third pilot death from the fifth crash reported in 2021.
According to reports of The Times of India, the incident occurred in Jaisalmer area of Rajasthan on Friday evening. The fighter jet reportedly crashed near the India-Pakistan border around 8:30 pm. Eyewitnesses reported that the jet caught on fire prior to the crash and explosion, which caused debris to fall over the distance of a kilometer.

Taking to the social networking website, Twitter, the official handle of the IAF said, “This evening, around 8:30 pm, a MiG-21 aircraft of IAF met with a flying accident in the western sector during a training sortie. Further details are awaited. An inquiry is being ordered.”

The government has claimed “human error” and “technical defects” for the previous crashes. Meanwhile, the fighter jet has been dubbed “flying coffin” given the recent crashes. According to a report, between 1971 and April 2912, as many as 482 MiG jets have crashed resulting in the deaths of almost 171 pilots, 39 civilians, and 8 service personnel.

According to The Times of India, the Jaisalmer crash pilot was unable to eject from the aircraft and has been identified as Wing Commander Harshit Sinha.
Moreover, The Times of India, added that although the MiG-21’s should be retired, delays in “induction of new fighters” have made it nearly impossible resulting in a rise in crashes across India.
