Draft Amendment to Sindh Police Rules, No Arrest Till Proof of Guilt

The Sindh cabinet has approved a draft amendment to police rules, according to which arrests will not be possible until the accused is proven guilty.

A statement issued by Sindh Legal Adviser Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that the draft amendments to the police rules were approved in the Sindh Cabinet meeting.

According to reports, Murtaza Wahab said that there is a flaw in Pakistan’s criminal justice system. Before this change, the accused was arrested as soon as the FIR was lodged but after the amendment in the police rules, no arrest will be made till the guilt is proved, hence, innocent until proven guilty.

He said that innocent people are also arrested, and such arrests increase the burden on jails and the judiciary. Realizing this, the Sindh government decided to amend the law. Furthermore, it is also morally wrong to imprison innocents, while allowing for the true culprit to roam free.

Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that police officials and experts were also consulted on the issue of amending the police rules.
