Lahore (3rd Mar, 2020): Senior anchorperson, Mubasher Lucman, discusses ways in which Pakistan can have Dr. Aafia Siddique released from her life of containment in the United States.

According to reports of Baaghi TV, senior journalist and anchorperson, Mubasher Lucman, has stated in a recent video that Dr Aafia Siddiqui could be brought back to Pakistan. The government should file a petition.

Mubasher Lucman said that while emotional talks have always  been made regarding Dr. Aafia, this case is not entirely understood. There are people who are in favor and those against it yet, no one knows the nature of the case. He adds that he did not even know what is right, however, the reality of it is now known, that if this tragedy is considered political exploitation, the assumption will not be completely wrong.

The journalist further talked about being in contact with Dawood Ghaznavi who informed, Mubasher Lucman, that there is no credible source of information about where Dr Aafia lived until 2008. While, it is known that she received her education in various United States universities, and went missing in 2003. Dr. Aafia was tried in the US court, which sentenced her to 86 years in prison, according to Dawood Ghaznavi.

In conversation with Dawood Ghaznavi, the anchorperson asked for him to explain if Dr. Aafia’s release is possible and on what grounds. A point that needs to be considered is that Aafia Siddiqui has never been charged by a US court on terrorism charges.

Another important point, Mubasher Lucman added, is that the US prosecution has never been interested in Aafia’s links with al-Qaeda or any terrorist organization. While, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was accused of trying to assassinate US officials. Before and during the trial in 2010, Aafia Siddiqui’s mental health questions arose, and I found that her mental state was not such that she could tell her lawyers about her own case. Now Dr Aafia has been sentenced to 86 years in prison for the mentally ill inmates, Aafia is kept in a book detailing the true and fictional story of Siddiqui.

After peace agreement, US still faces Afghan risks

Mubasher Lucman further said that if all things are right then there is a way to bring them back to Pakistan, there is no US pressure on Pakistan in this regard. On this point, the state does not need the approval of the US president nor any deal. The Pakistani government will not have any bargains with the United States. If the US court decides to send Aafia to Pakistan on sympathy, then there will be no pressure on the government.

He further said that the Governor Punjab has also tried to bring back Dr Aafia Siddiqui. He discussed that the PTI manifesto also included the release of Dr Aafia, which some parties are politicizing. He argued that Aafia Siddiqui’s visit to Pakistan is also important because her name is not used incorrectly for politics or other purposes, the fact that she is mentally ill, and should be released on the basis of humanitarian sympathy is vital.

The environment is improving, now Pakistan should file a petition to bring back Dr Aafia Siddiqui. In the coming days, Dawood Ghaznavi and Dr. Aafia’s lawyers in the United States will take a stand and interview them, I am not a legal expert, but I am talking about what Aafia’s lawyer is saying and that is, Dr. Aafia Siddique’s release is possible.
