King Charles reaffirms Harry, Meghan remain non-working Royals

King Charles reaffirms Harry, Meghan remain non-working Royals | Baaghi TV

Key Developments:

  • King Charles has reaffirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan remain non-working members of the Royal Family despite their return to the UK.
  • The Sussexes reportedly received only limited advance notice of the palace letter and were surprised by the way it was released.
  • Their eligibility for taxpayer-funded security remains a separate issue expected to be considered by RAVEC.

LONDON (BBC/The Guardian) — September 09, 2026: King Charles III has reaffirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, remain non-working members of the British Royal Family following their return to the United Kingdom.

The clarification was issued in a formal letter sent on behalf of the King by Lord Chamberlain Richard Benyon to government departments, military officials and other authorities involved in royal engagements. The correspondence was intended to remove uncertainty over how Harry and Meghan should be treated during their time in Britain.

The letter confirms that the position established when the couple stepped back from official royal duties in 2020 remains unchanged. Harry and Meghan will not undertake official engagements on behalf of the King and their charitable activities will continue to be regarded as private work.

“It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of the Sovereign, and are no longer working members of the Royal Family,” the letter states.

It also makes clear that their His and Her Royal Highness styles remain in abeyance and are not to be used. Their position is described as being comparable to that of private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.

The palace communication follows the couple’s return to Britain with their children after several years living in the United States. Their move back to the UK had raised questions about whether they might resume some form of official royal role. The letter makes clear that returning to Britain does not alter the arrangement agreed after their departure from royal duties.

The Sussexes were reportedly surprised by the timing and manner in which the letter was made public. Their representatives received a copy shortly before it was distributed to the media, according to reports. A spokesperson for the couple said they “were a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance.”

The couple’s representatives reportedly attempted to clarify aspects of the communication with Buckingham Palace before its public release. However, the letter was subsequently circulated to the media, prompting renewed attention on Harry and Meghan’s position within the monarchy.

The palace has said the purpose of the communication was to avoid uncertainty for organisations dealing with the Sussexes. It advises that questions concerning official courtesies or situations involving public funds should be directed to Buckingham Palace.

The letter also distinguishes between the couple’s private charitable activities and official royal duties. Harry and Meghan remain free to pursue charitable and commercial interests, but such activities will not be regarded as representing the Sovereign or the Royal Family.

Security is a separate matter. The correspondence states that operational security questions should continue to be handled by the relevant police authorities. Harry has previously challenged decisions concerning his publicly funded security in Britain, and the issue remains under consideration following the family’s return.

The Royal and VIP Executive Committee, commonly known as RAVEC, is responsible for decisions concerning security arrangements for members of the Royal Family and other prominent figures. The committee is expected to consider the Sussexes’ security position as they establish their life in Britain.

The latest clarification therefore does not represent a new withdrawal of royal duties by Harry and Meghan. Instead, it formally restates the arrangement that has been in place since 2020: the couple can continue their personal charitable and commercial activities but do not perform official duties as working members of the Royal Family.

Prince Harry has continued to support causes associated with him, including the Invictus Games, while Meghan has pursued her own commercial and charitable interests. Their return to Britain is expected to bring further public appearances, but any such activities will take place in a private capacity rather than as official royal engagements.

The palace’s latest communication is consequently focused on defining the boundaries between the Sussexes’ private activities and the responsibilities of working members of the British monarchy.
