Major Oil, Gas Reserves Discovered in Kohat | Baaghi TV

Islamabad (Business Recorder) — January 2, 2026: Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has announced a major oil and gas discovery in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, marking a significant boost to Pakistan’s energy sector at the start of the New Year.

Key Developments

  • OGDCL discovers commercially viable oil and gas reserves in Kohat’s Baragzai X-01 well
  • The well produces 4,100 BPD of oil and 10.5 MMSCFD of gas
  • Discovery expected to support Pakistan’s energy security and reduce import dependence

According to OGDCL, the discovery was made at the Baragzai X-01 (Slant) exploratory well over the Datta Formation in the Nashpa Block. The company holds a 65 percent working interest in the block, while Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) owns 30 percent and Government Holding (Private) Limited (GHPL) holds the remaining five percent.

The well was spudded on December 30, 2024, and drilled to a depth of 5,170 metres into the Kingriali Formation. Based on open-hole wireline log interpretation, a Cased Hole Drill Stem Test was conducted in the Datta Formation, confirming commercially viable production.

OGDCL stated that the well is currently producing 4,100 barrels of oil per day and 10.5 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. Production was achieved through a 32/64-inch choke at a wellhead flowing pressure of 3,880 PSI, underscoring the reservoir’s strong commercial potential.

The discovery is expected to contribute significantly to narrowing Pakistan’s energy demand and supply gap by adding indigenous oil and gas resources. Officials said it would also strengthen OGDCL’s hydrocarbon reserve base and support national energy security objectives.

OGDCL reaffirmed its commitment to continued exploration activities to unlock Pakistan’s hydrocarbon potential and contribute to long-term economic stability through reliable domestic energy supplies.
