Noor Mukadam murder case: Public demands justice

In the wake of the horrific beheading of Noor Mukadam by Zahir Jaffer, the son of a powerful businessman, the Pakistani public has been demanding justice, with #JusticeforNoor trending on social media.

The daughter of Shaukat Mukadam, Pakistan’s former ambassador to South Korea, 27-year-old Noor Mukadam was found brutally murdered in the sector F-7/4 area of Islamabad. Reports indicate that the accused, Zahir Jaffer, had shot her dead before beheading her.

As reported by Baaghi TV, a First Information Report (FIR) had been registered against Jaffer for the murder of Mukadam under Section 302. What has angered so many are reports that his family is trying to manipulate the justice system by portraying a monstrous human being as mentally unstable.

I am posting below a letter I wrote as, a 1983 graduate of Kinnaird College because I felt compelled to raise my voice—as a woman and a mother. The letter is as follows:

“On Tuesday, July 19, a 27-year-old woman named Noor Mukadam was brutally murdered and beheaded in Islamabad by her acquaintance Zahir Jaffer, whose father is reportedly the CEO of a prominent construction company in the city.

Unfortunately, our history of criminal justice shows that the wealthy and powerful too often get away with murder even after being proven guilty.

We are a group of women from Kinnaird College’s class of 1983 and mothers of children who are roughly the same age as Noor was. We are horrified at the thought that history will repeat itself and that another criminal will get off scot-free.

As a nation, we must put an end to such injustices against women. Perhaps we will look back on this brutal and horrific killing as the wake-up call we needed to realize that goal.

We demand of our country’s leaders that Noor and her family get the justice they deserve.
