Islamabad (Arab News) — March 30, 2026: The Government of Pakistan has dismissed circulating reports claiming that nationwide weekend lockdowns would be imposed to conserve fuel, calling the notification fake and urging citizens to rely only on verified information.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, authorities clarified that no such directive had been approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Responding to the viral document shared online, the ministry warned against misinformation, stating: “Be a responsible citizen, trust only authentic sources.”
It further cautioned, “Your one share can spread misunderstanding in society.”
Fake Notification Linked to Energy Crisis Concerns
The false notice alleged that a “complete and comprehensive lockdown” would be implemented nationwide every Saturday and Sunday starting April 5 due to the ongoing Gulf oil crisis.
Officials clarified that while Pakistan has introduced fuel conservation policies, no movement restrictions or shutdown orders have been announced.
The clarification follows heightened public concern over rising global energy prices amid regional tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which have disrupted supply routes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Government Implements Austerity Measures Instead
Rather than lockdowns, Islamabad has introduced targeted austerity steps aimed at reducing fuel consumption and stabilising the economy.
These measures include:
- Adoption of a four-day work week for certain government departments
- Reduction in fuel quotas for official vehicles
- Partial shift to online classes for higher education institutions
- Establishment of a national austerity fund
Pakistan also increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre following global oil market volatility.
To cushion consumers from sharp price shocks, the government approved a Rs27 billion financial package for the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority to settle price differential claims linked to fuel pricing adjustments.
