PESHAWAR (Dawn News) — August 03, 2026: Peshawar continues to report sporadic dengue infections as health authorities intensify surveillance across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while expressing concern over the limited sharing of patient information by Medical Teaching Institutions (MTIs), which they say affects timely preventive measures.
According to the latest weekly report issued by the Integrated Diseases Surveillance and Response System (IDS&RS) under the Directorate General Health Services, the province has recorded 250 confirmed dengue cases, with Peshawar accounting for 134 infections, the highest among all districts. Health officials maintain that infections remain scattered rather than concentrated in large clusters, allowing authorities to carry out targeted anti-dengue interventions.

The report notes that one of the major operational challenges remains the lack of complete patient line-lists from MTIs. Officials say these details are essential for tracing cases, identifying mosquito breeding hotspots and conducting timely vector control operations. Similar concerns were also raised by the health department in recent weeks as dengue cases gradually increased across the province.
A health official said: “However, it can jeopardise the situation if MTIs continue its lacklustre response to requests about sharing patients’ information with the department.”
Officials added that meetings have been held with MTI administrations to encourage regular data sharing, but comprehensive reporting has yet to be achieved.

The Public Health Reference Laboratory (PHRL) at Khyber Medical University has so far tested 1,354 suspected dengue patients free of charge. The provincial health department has also arranged courier services from all districts to ensure rapid transportation of samples and faster confirmation of suspected cases.

Besides Peshawar, dengue cases have been reported in 21 districts across the province. Kohat has recorded 45 confirmed infections, followed by Bannu with 14 cases, Bajaur with eight, Swabi and Mohmand with six each, while Karak, Hangu, Lower Dir and Nowshera have also reported infections.
Surveillance teams continue extensive vector-control activities across affected areas. According to official figures, workers have inspected more than 279,000 locations, mechanically destroyed mosquito larvae in 392 houses, eliminated larvae from 914 water containers, and chemically treated 182 outdoor breeding sites to limit mosquito populations.

Health experts say Peshawar remains particularly vulnerable because it has experienced repeated dengue outbreaks over the past decade. They stress that timely reporting of confirmed patients allows authorities to conduct indoor and outdoor spraying, inspect surrounding areas and educate nearby residents.
One public health expert explained: “When a mosquito bites an infected person then it becomes source of transmission to others, due to which the department requires all details about cases, their address etc so that preventive measures could be started.”
Officials also noted that prolonged electricity outages during the summer may increase residents’ exposure to mosquito bites, making preventive measures such as eliminating standing water, using mosquito repellents and seeking early medical attention even more important.

Authorities have urged hospitals and healthcare institutions to strengthen coordination by sharing timely patient information, saying effective surveillance remains essential to preventing a large-scale outbreak similar to previous years. Health officials also continue to advise the public to remove stagnant water around homes, use mosquito protection and immediately seek medical care if symptoms such as high fever, severe headache or body aches develop.
