Higher Vitamin D Levels Associated with Lower Hospitalisation for Respiratory Infections

Higher Vitamin D Levels Associated with Lower Hospitalisation for Respiratory Infections | Baaghi TV

London — January 23, 2026: A large new study led by researchers at the University of Surrey suggests that adults with higher vitamin D levels are significantly less likely to be hospitalised for serious respiratory tract infections, including bronchitis and pneumonia.

Key Developments:

  • A major international study found that higher vitamin D levels are linked with fewer hospitalisations for respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis.
  • The research showed that people with severe vitamin D deficiency had a significantly greater risk of hospital admission, and that risk declined steadily with higher vitamin D levels.
  • Experts noted that the link persisted even after accounting for age, lifestyle, and health factors, highlighting vitamin D’s broader role in immune function.

Analysing health data from 36,258 adults in the UK Biobank, scientists from Surrey, in partnership with the University of Oxford and the University of Reading, found that severe deficiency of vitamin D — defined as blood levels below 15 nmol/L — was linked to a 33% higher likelihood of hospital admission with respiratory illness compared with sufficient vitamin D status (at least 75 nmol/L).

Importantly, the research also demonstrated a dose-response relationship: for every 10 nmol/L increase in vitamin D level, the risk of hospitalisation from respiratory infections dropped by about four percent. This pattern held true even after adjusting for age, sex, lifestyle, and existing health conditions.

Lead researchers noted that respiratory infections remain a major public health challenge worldwide, particularly among middle-aged and older adults, who are already at elevated risk from conditions such as pneumonia and bronchitis. The findings — published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition — add to a growing body of evidence that vitamin D status may play a role in immune system resilience and infection outcomes.

While the study stops short of proving direct causation, its authors say the clear association supports further investigation into how vitamin D and related public health strategies might help reduce severe respiratory disease and ease pressure on healthcare systems, especially during winter months when levels of the nutrient tend to be lower.
