Tehran (The Guardian) — July 3, 2026: Iran is preparing for an extensive six-day state funeral for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with authorities expecting one of the country’s largest public gatherings in decades. The ceremonies, delayed earlier because of the regional conflict, are scheduled to begin in Tehran before concluding with his burial in the northeastern city of Mashhad.
The funeral comes months after Khamenei was killed during the opening phase of the military confrontation involving the United States and Israel. Iranian authorities have presented the ceremonies as both a national farewell and a demonstration of political resilience, while security remains on high alert amid continuing regional tensions.

According to Iranian officials, the funeral procession will travel through multiple locations, including Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad. Additional commemorative events are also planned in the Iraqi Shia holy cities of Karbala and Najaf, reflecting Khamenei’s religious significance among many Shia communities.
Iran’s First Vice President, Mohammad Reza Aref, described the ceremonies as “the most important event of this century” and the largest national gathering since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Meanwhile, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf called on supporters to demonstrate national unity, stating:
“Iran stands on the threshold of creating one of the greatest scenes in its history, a day when a nation, with hearts full of love, loyalty and the pain of separation, comes to bid farewell to a great man.”

Authorities have announced temporary closures of government offices, traffic restrictions and enhanced security measures across Tehran to manage the anticipated crowds. Airspace restrictions are also expected during key stages of the funeral processions.

Iranian military officials have simultaneously warned against any external military action during the funeral period. Ali Abdollahi, commander of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, said:
“We warn the enemies of Iran, especially the U.S. and the Zionist regime (Israel), to avoid any miscalculation.”
International participation is also taking shape. China has confirmed that senior lawmaker He Wei will attend the ceremonies on behalf of Beijing, while India has announced that a ministerial delegation will represent New Delhi during the funeral events.

Iranian state media and officials have indicated that the funeral is intended to symbolize continuity following the country’s recent leadership transition. However, Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father as Iran’s Supreme Leader after reportedly being injured in the same February attack, is not expected to appear publicly during the ceremonies because of security concerns, according to Iranian officials.
