Prince Harry set to appeal to courts for police protection

Jan 16, 2022: US-based Prince Harry is appealing to British courts after the government refused allow him police protection paid for out of his own pocket, arguing the decision means he cannot return home.

Harry and his wife Meghan lost the protection they paid to their UK taxpayers when they left frontline royal duty in 2020 and moved to the United States. Now living in California, he has his own private security team. In legal documents, Harry argued that the US team would not have adequate powers to protect his family in Britain.

The UK’s PA news agency reported on Sunday that the Duke of Sussex was seeking a judicial review in London after the Home Office rejected a request from Britain to pay for police protection.

“The UK will always be Prince Harry’s home and a country he wants his wife and children to be safe in,” a legal representative for the duke said in a statement to PA.

“With the lack of police protection comes too great a personal risk.”

Last summer, Harry’s car was chased by paparazzi photographers as they drove out of a charity event in London. The next day, he and older brother William unveiled a statue of their late mother, Princess Diana. She died in 1997 after being chased by a speeding car in Paris, including a photographer, and Harry’s relationship with the British media remained strained.

The legal representative noted that Harry had made two trips to Afghanistan on combat duty, and said that “in recent years his family has been subjected to well-documented neo-Nazi and extremist threats.” A spokesman for the British government declined to comment on any legal action, but said that its security was “rigorous and proportionate” for VIPs.

“It is our long-standing policy not to provide detailed information on those arrangements. To do so could compromise their integrity and affect individuals’ security,” the spokesperson said.
