Sidhu’s love for Imran Khan sparks controversy on Indian news media
Nov 21, 2021:Thousands of Sikhs from India were welcomed in Pakistan for one of the world’s largest birthday celebrations, that of Guru Nanak’s 552nd Birthday.
Indian politician and former TV host Navjot Singh Sadhu visited Pakistan across the border on Saturday. This year saw more heightened enthusiasm for the pilgrimage, as devotees from India were unable to cross the border in 2020 due to corona virus restrictions.
Sidhu was welcomed by Muhammad Latif, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kartarpur Corridor Project Management Unit, who congratulated him on behalf of Prime Minister Imran Khan and Pakistan. Sidhu welcomed the gesture saying that he [Imran Khan] is like my elder brother and he has given me a lot of love.
The video of the exchange went viral in India and became a top trend on Twitter. Sadhu’s rivals from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused him of being a “traitor” while the media has been broadcasting hate speeches against him ever since. Talking to media in India, Sidhu ended the controversy by saying that let the BJP say what it wants.
A leading TV channel in India, Times Now, shared the snippet on Twitter and asked Sidhu why he said what he said. The segment then later discussed “Sidhu’s love for Pakistan.”
