Uzbekistan's President to visit Pakistan on invitation of PM Imran Khan

Mar 1, 2022: Uzbekistan’s president to arrive in Islamabad for two-day visit on Thursday on invitation of PM Imran Khan, according to a statement by the Foreign Office.

At the invitation of Prime Minister Imran Khan, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev will pay an official visit to Pakistan from March 3-4, the Foreign Office said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Uzbek president will be accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes the foreign minister, other cabinet members, senior government officials and business and media officials. This will be President Mirziyoyev’s first visit to Pakistan since taking office in 2016. President Marziyev’s visit will mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Uzbekistan.

During the visit, the two leaders will review all aspects of bilateral relations, including cooperation in the political, trade and economic fields, relations, education, culture, security and defense. They will discuss important regional and international issues. The statement further said that a number of bilateral agreements / MoUs would be signed.

The Prime Minister will have a one-on-one meeting with the President of Uzbekistan, followed by a delegation-level discussion and a “joint media stakeout”. Prime Minister Imran Khan will also host an official banquet in his honor. President Mirziyoyev will meet separately with President Arif Alvi.

The two sides would focus on enhancing political and strategic linkages; fast tracking trade, transit and economic ties; enhancing connectivity; and promoting educational and cultural collaboration. The Trans-Afghan Railway Project, connecting Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, will be a key area of deliberations. There will also be fruitful interaction with leading businessmen of the two countries.

Pakistan has expanded its engagement with Central Asian countries under the “Vision Central Asia” policy framework, with five key aspects: political and diplomatic, trade and investment, energy and communications, security and defense, and the people. Public relations with Relations between Pakistan and Uzbekistan have improved over the past few years.

Prime Minister Imran visited Uzbekistan in July 2021. The two leaders recently met in Beijing on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics on February 5, 2022.
