LOS ANGELES (Variety) — April 15, 2026: More than 1,000 filmmakers, actors and television professionals — including Joaquin Phoenix, Ben Stiller, and Kristen Stewart — have signed a public letter opposing the proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance.
The open letter argues that the planned deal could reshape the global entertainment industry by concentrating power among fewer corporate entities, potentially affecting employment, creative independence and audience choice.

In the statement published publicly, signatories wrote: “We are deeply concerned by indications of support for this merger that prioritize the interests of a small group of powerful stakeholders over the broader public good.”
The letter further warned that consolidation could damage artistic diversity, adding: “The integrity, independence, and diversity of our industry would be grievously compromised. Competition is essential for a healthy economy and a healthy democracy.”

Industry Concerns Over Consolidation
The proposed acquisition, led by Skydance CEO David Ellison, has drawn scrutiny from creatives who say repeated mergers have already reduced opportunities across Hollywood.

Signatories argued that large-scale consolidation has contributed to fewer mid-budget productions, declining independent distribution channels and shrinking job opportunities across film crews and technical professions.
Television creator Damon Lindelof, known for major studio collaborations, explained his decision to support the letter despite professional risks.
He wrote that Hollywood is fundamentally a “blue-collar town,” warning: “Hollywood mergers mean fewer movies and fewer TV shows and that means fewer jobs.”

In its statement, Paramount said the merger would allow the company to “greenlight more projects, back bold ideas, support talent across multiple stages of their careers,” while increasing annual theatrical film output and preserving established creative brands.
Regulatory scrutiny is reportedly underway, with officials examining potential competition impacts within the U.S. media market. Industry observers say the outcome could shape the future structure of global entertainment production and distribution for years to come.
