WASHINGTON (Variety) — April 14, 2026: US President Donald Trump removed a controversial social media post depicting himself in a Christ-like image after criticism emerged from political allies, religious figures and commentators across the ideological spectrum.

The image, shared on Truth Social, appeared to be AI-generated and portrayed Trump dressed as Jesus while healing a sick individual, surrounded by symbolic American imagery including military figures, bald eagles and the Statue of Liberty.

The post sparked immediate debate online, with critics arguing that religious symbolism had been used inappropriately. The White House did not issue an immediate official response regarding the controversy.

According to CNN chief White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins, Trump later clarified his understanding of the image after its removal, telling reporters “that he thought he was depicted as a doctor in the image he shared.”

The controversy followed earlier criticism by Trump directed toward Pope Leo, whom he described as “weak” over opposition to conflict involving Iran, further intensifying public scrutiny of his online messaging.

Former athlete and political commentator Riley Gaines wrote on social media: “Seriously, I cannot understand why he’d post this… a little humility would serve him well. God shall not be mocked.”

Television host Joey Jones of Fox News also criticized the post, stating: “That picture is looney tunes… no unforced errors would be great!”

Conservative activist Brilyn Hollyhand described the image as “gross blasphemy,” arguing that faith should not be used as political symbolism.

Similarly, political commentator Michael Knowles from The Daily Wire urged removal of the image, saying it would be better “spiritually and politically to delete the picture, no matter the intent.”

Religious advocacy group Knights Templar International issued a strong statement condemning the post and calling for an apology, reminding followers of biblical teachings that “God will not be mocked.”

Analysts note that AI-generated visuals are increasingly shaping political discourse, raising concerns about authenticity, public perception and ethical boundaries in digital campaigning.
