COVID-19 vaccine likely to be '99%' effective, claims Chinese firm

Chinese scientists working on a COVID-19 vaccine are “99%” sure it will be effective and are hoping to produce 100 million samples.

Sinovac, a Beijing-based biotechnology company, is carrying out a trial with more than 1,000 volunteers and is preparing to hold stage 3 experiments in the United Kingdom (UK).

Luo Baishan, a researcher at Sinovac, is very optimistic and claims this vaccine to be “99%” effective and useful.

A commercial plant is already under construction in Beijing and it is hoped 100 million doses can be produced.

Helen Yang, senior director of investor relations, said, “We are speaking to several European countries and I think did discuss with the UK as well. Currently it’s a very preliminary stage for the discussion.”

“We are firstly targeting high-risk groups, for example, health workers or senior citizens, who may have a higher level of fatality rate,” she added.

Earlier this month, AstraZeneca, the pharmaceutical giant, teamed up with Oxford University to manufacture and distribute the vaccine if clinical trials turn out to be positive.
