Excessive Gaming Tied to Poor Diet and Sleep Among Youth: Study | BaaghiTV

ISLAMABAD: Spending more than 10 hours a week playing video games may negatively affect young people’s eating habits, sleep patterns, and body weight, according to new academic research reported by Xinhua.

Key Developments:

  • A university-led study links excessive gaming (over 10 hours weekly) to poor diet, disrupted sleep, and higher obesity risk among students.
  • Researchers stress that moderate gaming shows no major health impact, identifying excessive screen time as the core concern.
  • Separate global research highlights how artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the gaming industry, changing both development practices and player expectations.

The study, led by Australia’s Curtin University and published in the journal Nutrition, surveyed 317 university students from five institutions across the country. Participants, with a median age of 20, were grouped based on weekly gaming time: low (up to five hours), moderate (five to 10 hours), and high (more than 10 hours).

Researchers found that students who played games for up to 10 hours a week showed similar health outcomes. However, those exceeding that limit reported noticeable declines in diet quality, increased sleep disruption, and higher body mass index (BMI) levels.

Professor Mario Siervo from Curtin University’s School of Population Health said the findings suggest that excessive gaming, rather than gaming itself, poses the main health risk. He noted that students gaming beyond the 10-hour threshold showed clear differences in overall well-being.

According to the data, heavy gamers recorded a median BMI of 26.3, compared with 22.2 and 22.8 among low and moderate gamers. While poor sleep quality was common across all groups, longer gaming hours were linked to greater sleep disturbance.
