LOS ANGELES (Japan Today/The Express Tribune) — June 18, 2026: The Recording Academy has announced a series of changes for the 2027 Grammy Awards, including the introduction of five new categories and revised eligibility rules for the prestigious Best New Artist award.

The updates, unveiled on June 17, are intended to reflect the changing landscape of the global music industry and recognize a broader range of musical genres and creative contributions.

Among the newly created categories is Best Asian Pop Music Performance, which will honor performers across Asian pop genres, including K-pop, J-pop, C-pop and other regional styles that have gained significant international audiences in recent years.

The Recording Academy has also introduced Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, a category designed to recognize artists whose work is rooted in traditional pop styles rather than contemporary mainstream pop music.

Another addition is Best Latin Song, which will honor songwriters for compositions recorded primarily in Spanish. The Academy said the move acknowledges the growing influence and commercial success of Latin music worldwide.

Changes have also been made to the R&B and folk fields. A new Best R&B Collaboration Performance category will recognize collaborative works, while the existing Best Folk Album category has been renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album. A separate Best Traditional Folk Album category has also been established.

The Recording Academy further announced revisions to eligibility requirements for the Best New Artist category, one of the Grammys’ most closely watched awards.

Under the updated rules, artists can now be submitted for consideration up to four times, compared to the previous limit of three submissions. Academy officials said the adjustment reflects the reality that many artists require more time to achieve widespread industry recognition.

According to the revised guidelines, eligibility will continue to depend on whether an artist achieved a significant breakthrough during the relevant awards cycle. Artists who have previously received Grammy nominations remain ineligible for the category.

Recording Academy Chief Executive Officer Harvey Mason Jr. said the changes are designed to better represent the diversity of contemporary music.

“The changes advanced by our Recording Academy members speak to the breadth of today’s music industry and the many genres, crafts and creators shaping it,” Mason said.

He added: “We’re excited to see these updates come to life in the year ahead as we celebrate the music people who are driving music forward.”

The Academy also announced adjustments to voting procedures, allowing certain qualified members to participate in a wider range of categories than before.

Music industry analysts note that the addition of an Asian pop category reflects the increasing global influence of artists from East and Southeast Asia, particularly as K-pop and other regional genres continue to achieve commercial success in North America, Europe and the Middle East.

The expansion of folk, R&B and Latin recognition similarly aligns with broader industry trends, as music organizations seek to acknowledge evolving audience preferences and genre diversity.
