India witnesses fresh surge in cases as Delhi CM tests positive for COVID-19

Jan 4, 2021: India has seen 37,379 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, the country’s health ministry said on Tuesday, the highest since early September.
The omicron variant has out paced delta in some areas such as capital India’s New Delhi.
One of the new victims was Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who addressed an election rally without wearing a mask on Monday.
Amid rising cases of COVID-19 in the country, Arvind Kejriwal is running a whirlwind campaign for India’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Similar rallies have been held in the other states ahead of voting scheduled to be held in the next few months. Kejriwal said in a Twitter post that he had been isolated at home and urged those who had come in contact with him in recent days to do the same and get tested for Covid 19. “I have tested positive for Covid. Mild symptoms. Have isolated myself at home. Those who came in touch with me in last few days, kindly isolate yourself and get yourself tested,”
Kejriwal was in Dehradun yesterday, and before that he held rallies in Amritsar and Patiala. Delhi Health Minister Stander Jain said, “It is not a big issue for the Chief Minister to have COVID-19. But people should be careful and everyone wearing a mask will be protected from infection.”
In the capital, the positivity rate has increased with 4,099 new cases in 24 hours on Monday. According to an official statement, the positivity rate in Delhi is 6.46%. 6,288 COVID-19 patients are isolated at home.
The death toll in India rose by 124 to a total of 482,017. The total number of infections is 34.96 million.
