Indian Chronicles: a timeline of India’s disinformation campaign against Pakistan

India’s international disinformation campaign against Pakistan in different parts of the world especially in Europe (EU) was highlighted by a Brussels-based non-governmental organization (NGO), EU DisinfoLab.

According to the details, a European NGO that monitors fake news has revealed that India has been carrying out false propaganda against Pakistan through various fake networks for the last 15 years.

After an investigative research by EU DisinfoLab, the NGO published a report entitled “Indian Chronicles” that brought to surface the extent of India’s disinformation campaign targeting Pakistan through fake news, false testimonies at the UN Human rights Commission and malicious propaganda involving the EU members of Parliament.

However, “Indian Chronicles” report laid bare a longstanding and extensive network of Indian attempts to specifically target Pakistan. According to the reports, the Indian operation took place over 15 years in 116 countries, featuring over 500 fake media outlets and a dozen fake NGOs. This massive network aimed to push a pro-India and anti-Pakistan narrative in the EU and the UN.

Baaghi TV has learnt that researchers at the EU DisinfoLab have demanded an investigation against the Indian intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), over the fake news network, citing fake news in the EU.

The Brussels-based organisation also revealed in their report that EP Today — short for European Parliament Today — which is a news website claiming to be the “monthly news magazine for the European Parliament, takes much of its content taken from the Russia Today (RT) news outlet. The disinformation network run is operated by a New Delhi-based entity, called Srivastava Group, which had been designed primarily to “discredit Pakistan internationally.

Furthermore, the report reveals that for the past 15 years, the New Delhi group has been carrying out large-scale propaganda against Pakistan with the help of fake websites. Back in 2019, around 265 pro-Indian websites operating across 65 countries had been uncovered by the researchers which were later traced back to the New Delhi-based Srivastava Group.

Indian digital media has been engaging in systematic propaganda against Pakistan that grew exponentially following the 2018 general elections, as per data revealed by Islamabad Institute of Policy Research (IPRI). IPRI is an Islamabad-based non-partisan think tank on all facets of National Security, including international relations & lawfare, strategic studies, governance & public policy and economic security in Pakistan.

The report reveals four key themes around which the Indian propaganda has been revolving around:

  • sabotaging the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)
  • campaigns against Pakistani armed forces
  • propaganda on Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK)
  • stoking civil unrest within Pakistan

In August to October 2020, CPEC Authority Chairman Lieutenant General (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa had been one of the prime targets of the Indian propaganda campaign. Moreover, multiple operations related to escalating tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) starting from Pulwama false flag and disinformation campaigns related to Balakot Strike in February 2019.

In October 2020, anti-military propaganda on social media linked to significant rise in Indian shelling along LoC, goading Pakistan into a potential military engagement. At the same time a visit of 27 MEPS to IIOJK is arranged along with a meeting with PM Modi by Srivastava linked WESTT and International Institute for Non-Aligned Studies (IINS).

In year 2021, the main focus of India’s international disinformation campaign was on terrorism related sanctions being placed on Pakistan. As a result, in February to April 2021, multiple campaigns and lobbying efforts were made to Blacklist Pakistan at the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). Not only that, coordinated disinformation campaigns were run linked to Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protests, with claims of armed forces defecting to TLP / Civil War and Mutiny narratives.

Till date, the involved news agency and other dubious NGOs are functioning and carrying out their activities with impunity. While steps are being taken at the diplomatic level, their impact is yet to be seen. The international community must speak up against this dangerous disinformation campaign and demand an explanation from New Delhi about this group, which continues to operate despite being exposed for the first time in 2019.

The Indian attempt to create a negative impression of Pakistan through fake news betrays a sinister campaign. The investigation carried out by EU DisinfoLab had been led by the belief that citizens should be well-informed about the source of information and prevent them from being manipulated, especially on social media.

This mind-blowing investigation conducted by EU DisinfoLab should serve as a wake-up call for India to punish such actors who intentionally engage in disinformation and abuse international institutions.
