The city of Tiberias, located on its western shore, became a central hub of Jewish learning and jurisprudence after the destruction of the Second Temple.
Many revered Jewish scholars and sages are buried in the surrounding region.

For Christians, the Sea of Galilee is among the holiest locations associated with the life and mission of Prophet Jesus (Hazrat Isa عليه السلام): Jesus preached extensively in towns along its shores, including Capernaum, Bethsaida, and Magdala.

Islamic Perspective and Prophetic Importance
In Islam, Lake Galilee—referred to in authentic Hadith as Lake Tiberias—is a profound eschatological importance directly linked to the coming of Dajjal (the False Messiah).
Sahih Hadith Reference
A famous narration reported by Fatimah bint Qays (RA) and recorded in Sahih Muslim recounts the encounter of Tamim ad-Dari (RA) with a chained man on an island, whom the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ later identified as Dajjal.

Among the questions asked by Dajjal was: Is there water in Lake Tiberias?
When informed that water was still present, Dajjal replied: “Soon it will dry up.”
The Prophet ﷺ affirmed this account, establishing the drying of Lake Tiberias as one of the major signs preceding the appearance of Dajjal.
Islamic scholars emphasize that temporary fluctuations or seasonal drops do not fulfill this prophecy; the sign refers to the lake drying completely.
Physical Appearance of Dajjal (As described in Sahih Hadith)
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provided explicit descriptions to protect believers from deception:
- Dajjal will be one-eyed
- His right eye will be blind, described as: “Like a floating grape” (Sahih Bukhari 3438; Sahih Muslim 2933)
- The word “كافر” (Kafir) will be written on his forehead, readable by all believers
- He will claim false divinity and perform deceptive feats
- His trial (fitnah) will be the greatest test faced by humanity
