Netflix buys Night School Studio, creators of Oxenfree

The streaming service industry is facing greater competition as an increasing number of platforms are becoming available and as such, to diversify its revenue streams, Netlfix has taken to enter the gaming industry.

According to reports, Netflix has bought its first video game studio the Night School Studio, creators of Oxenfree. Furthermore, it has already rolled out five video game titles in certain European markets.

Oxenfree is Night School Studio’s best-known title – along with also being its first – and is available on a number of platforms, namely Sony’s PlayStation, Microsoft’s Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC. These games, now also under Netflix, have become the streaming giant’s first titles outside of mobiles.

The good news is, these games are now part of Netflix’s membership and membership holders will now be able to play them without any additional charge, microtransactions, or ads.

The streaming giant started looking towards newer horizons after its last quarterly earnings, since competition is fast increasing in the streaming industry, with Disney+, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max gaining an increasing number of subscribers. A number of android titles had already been introduced in Spain, Poland, and Italy, a couple of which are “Stranger Things: 1984”, and “Shooting Hoops”. The latter has yet to be released in Poland, but will soon be entering the Polish markets.

The company stated that this was the time where it looked towards how its subscribers viewed games.
