Key Developments:

  • Russell Brand convicted of rape and three sexual assaults
  • Jury acquits him of two other rape charges
  • Judge warns of a significant prison sentence
  • Police continue investigating two further rape allegations

LONDON (CNN) — November 06, 2026: British actor, comedian and media personality Russell Brand has been convicted of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London. The verdicts concern four women and incidents dating between 2004 and 2009, marking a major development in the criminal proceedings against the former television and radio star.

Brand, 51, was found guilty of raping a 21-year-old woman in 2009 and sexually assaulting three other women. However, the jury acquitted him of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. The eight men and four women on the jury reached their decisions after approximately eight and a half hours of deliberations.

Brand had denied the charges, maintaining that the sexual encounters were consensual. Following the verdicts, he was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing.

Presiding judge Mr Justice Joel Bennathan indicated that the comedian faced a substantial prison term. “The consequence of that is inevitably a significant custodial term,” the judge said while explaining the decision to remand him. Sentencing is scheduled for November 9.

The Metropolitan Police welcomed the convictions, describing the case as an important outcome for the women who had come forward. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said Brand had “used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women.”

He added: “As his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement. I hope this conviction sends a clear message that no one is above the law, no matter how famous or powerful they may be.”

The Crown Prosecution Service also highlighted the role of influence and power in the prosecution's case. Speaking outside court, David Roberts said the evidence portrayed Brand as “a calculated sexual predator”, alleging that he had used his growing fame to create opportunities to pursue women regardless of their wishes.

One of the central allegations concerned a woman who met Brand after attending one of his performances in west London in 2009. She told the court that an encounter which had initially been consensual later turned into rape when Brand forced her into anal sex and ignored her requests to stop.

The court also heard about the effect the incident had on her life. A friend described her as a “bright, bubbly and confident girl” before the experience, adding that “this experience definitely changed her”, according to the Press Association.

Other convictions concerned incidents involving women Brand encountered through his professional and social circles. One woman described being groped at a gathering in Soho in 2004, while another recounted an incident at her workplace in 2005. A further complainant told the court about an assault in 2009 involving a massage she said she had been forced to provide.

The proceedings followed a wider investigation into allegations against Brand that came to public attention in 2023 through a joint media investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4's Dispatches programme. The reports prompted a number of women to approach the police with accounts of alleged misconduct.

The Metropolitan Police subsequently launched an investigation, examining historical allegations and gathering evidence from witnesses. The force has confirmed that inquiries into two additional allegations of rape remain ongoing. Prosecutors are assessing the material to determine whether further charges should be brought. These matters remain allegations and have not resulted in convictions.

Brand's career began in stand-up comedy, where his provocative humour and willingness to discuss sex and drug addiction helped establish his public persona. He became a familiar name in Britain during the early 2000s through television appearances, particularly as the presenter of Celebrity Big Brother's Big Mouth.

His career was not without controversy. In 2001, MTV UK dismissed him after he arrived at work dressed as Osama bin Laden shortly after the September 11 attacks. Brand later attributed his behaviour to his addiction to crack cocaine and heroin. He entered rehabilitation in 2002 and has publicly maintained that he remained sober afterwards.

In 2006, he moved into mainstream radio with The Russell Brand Show on BBC Radio 2. The programme ended abruptly in 2008 following a controversy involving offensive telephone messages left for actor Andrew Sachs, an incident that triggered widespread criticism and regulatory scrutiny.

Despite these setbacks, Brand continued to build an international entertainment career. He appeared in Hollywood productions including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek, expanding his profile beyond British television and comedy.

His personal life also attracted considerable media attention, particularly his marriage to American pop singer Katy Perry. The two met in 2009 and became engaged later that year while travelling in India. They married in October 2010 in Rajasthan, but their relationship ended the following year when Brand filed for divorce in December 2011. The divorce was finalised in July 2012. Their highly publicised marriage placed Brand firmly within the international celebrity spotlight, while their separation became a major subject of entertainment news coverage.

After his divorce from Perry, Brand began a relationship with British journalist and film producer Jemima Goldsmith in 2013. Goldsmith, who was previously married to former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan, had two sons from that marriage. Their relationship attracted attention in both British and Pakistani media because of their respective public profiles. The couple separated in 2014, after which Brand's personal life took a different direction.

In subsequent years, Brand increasingly moved away from conventional entertainment towards discussions about spirituality, meditation, addiction and personal recovery. He published his self-help book Recovery: Freedom From Our Addictions in 2017 and shifted some of his performances from traditional comedy venues to wellness-oriented events.

That same year, he married author and illustrator Laura Gallacher, with whom he has three children. Gallacher was among those who attended court during his recent trial. Brand reportedly told her “I love you” before entering the dock to hear the verdicts.

His public profile underwent another transformation during the Covid-19 pandemic, when he expanded his online presence through commentary on politics, society, spirituality and current affairs. His YouTube channel attracted millions of subscribers, while he also developed an audience on the Rumble platform. He subsequently embraced Christianity and published a book about his religious conversion through a publishing imprint associated with American conservative commentator Tucker Carlson.

The convictions mark a significant turning point in Brand's public and professional life. While his entertainment career once spanned British television, international radio and Hollywood productions, the criminal proceedings have placed allegations of sexual violence and the abuse of influence at the centre of his public record.

With sentencing approaching and police inquiries into further allegations continuing, the legal consequences of the case are not yet fully concluded. The convictions, however, have established criminal responsibility for four offences, while the remaining allegations will have to be assessed through the appropriate legal process.
