New Technique to help in early Diagnosis of Parkinson’s: Research | Baaghi TV

Researchers in the United States (US) have claimed they have found a method that could aid in the early detection of disease before symptoms start to show, allowing for timely treatment.

Scientists in the US are hopeful they have found a new technique to help “pinpoint disease” before symptoms appear allowing them the ability to diagnose it early. The technique could enable them to speed up the treatment process. They say it could also make the diagnosis of Parkinson’s substantially easier.

At the moment, it is difficult to diagnose Parkinson’s disease as there is no “specific test” for the condition. Another problem is that its symptoms can vary from person to person. Some of its symptoms are even similar to other illnesses making it a probability for a misdiagnosis.

Based on the latest research, findings of which have been published in the Lancet Neurology Journal, scientists have expressed hope that they would be able to identify a “buildup of abnormal proteins” usually associated with Parkinson’s. According to the research, the method known as alpha-synuclein seed amplification assay (alphaSyn-SAA) can help to accurately identify people at risk of developing the disease.

They argue that the research findings could make waves in scientific advancement and help in the early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease.

On average, Parkinson’s has been on the rise in the last twenty-five years, affecting nearly ten million people worldwide. In recent years, many renowned people have been diagnosed with it, including US Congresswomen Jennifer Wexton and British television presenter Jeremy Paxman, leading to better awareness of the disease.

Study co-author, Prof Andrew Siderowf of the University of Pennsylvania, said: “Identifying an effective biomarker for Parkinson’s disease pathology could have profound implications for the way we treat the condition”. Siderowf added that the study findings could make it possible to diagnose earlier, “identify the best treatments for different subsets of patients and speed up clinical trials”.

According to prior research, Parkinson’s is caused by a buildup of abnormal proteins (see above) within the brain and the nervous system. This buildup can develop over time, often years, during which physical symptoms such as tremors, sluggishness in movement, or muscle stiffness start to appear.

The research focused on 1,123 patients, which is one of the largest patient pools, enabling scientists to assess the significance and usefulness of the alphaSyn-SAA technique. The focus group included patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s, at-risk of it, or those showing early non-motor symptoms (prodromal people). Non-motor symptoms can comprise sleep disturbance and/or loss of smell.

During the study, scientists took samples of fluid surrounding the brain and the spinal cord from each participant, analyzing the samples to look for the alphasSyn. In conclusion, the study inferred that the technique not only allows for accurate detection of the disease but also helps to identify people at risk of it, as well as those showing early non-motor symptoms.

God Bless all Parkinson’s Caregivers. Stay Strong, take small moments throughout the day to thank yourself, to love your self, and pray to whatever faith, star, spiritual force you believe in and ask for strength.
