Islamabad (Radio Pakistan) — July 6, 2026: Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to protecting its water rights under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), with Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar stating that access to water under the agreement is an “inalienable right” and remains vital to the country’s future.
In a statement shared on X, Tarar said Pakistan would continue to safeguard its rights under the World Bank-brokered treaty, which has governed the sharing of the Indus river system between Pakistan and India since 1960. He described water as a matter of national importance for the country.

“Pakistan’s right to water under the Indus Waters Treaty is its inalienable right and is our lifeline which we will protect,” Tarar said.
The minister also rejected India’s unilateral decision to place the treaty “in abeyance,” maintaining that such a move has “no legal or moral standing.” He further argued that the action was inconsistent with internationally recognised principles on the cooperative management of shared water resources.
“This act has caused India nothing but embarrassment. It is a clear violation of the ‘One Water-One Vision’ principle endorsed by the United Nations,” Tarar added.
His remarks come amid continued diplomatic differences between Islamabad and New Delhi over the future of the treaty. Pakistan has consistently maintained that the IWT is an internationally binding agreement that cannot be altered or suspended unilaterally, while India has reiterated its own position regarding the treaty in the context of broader bilateral security concerns.

Earlier this month, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the treaty during an international seminar in Islamabad, stating that the country would safeguard its water rights through all available legal and diplomatic means. He warned that the weaponisation of shared water resources could undermine regional stability and international cooperation.
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 with the mediation of the World Bank, remains one of the longest-standing water-sharing agreements between the two neighbouring countries. It allocates the waters of the eastern rivers to India and the western rivers to Pakistan while providing mechanisms for technical cooperation and dispute resolution.
Pakistan has repeatedly stated that uninterrupted access to the western rivers is essential for its agriculture, food security, hydropower generation and overall economy. Officials continue to emphasize dialogue, adherence to international law and existing treaty mechanisms as the preferred path for resolving differences over shared water resources.
