ISLAMABAD (Arab News) — September 12, 2026: Pakistan has asked Hong Kong to consider the resumption of Cathay Pacific flights to the country as Islamabad looks to strengthen aviation, trade and business links with the territory.
Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan made the proposal during a meeting with Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on September 11, on the sidelines of the 11th Belt and Road Summit in Hong Kong.

The meeting focused on expanding trade and economic cooperation, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to stronger commercial ties and people-to-people links, according to Pakistan’s Press Information Department.
The Commerce Ministry said the discussions also covered trade in services, aviation, finance and business-to-business connectivity. “He particularly urged Hong Kong to explore the resumption of Cathay Pacific flights to Pakistan,” the ministry said, adding that improved air links could facilitate business, tourism and commercial exchanges.
The ministry also said Jam Kamal called for “greater engagement in trade in services, aviation, finance and business-to-business connectivity.”

Cathay Pacific previously operated services between Hong Kong and Karachi but ended the route in 2014. The airline had suspended flights after the attack on Karachi airport in June that year and subsequently discontinued the service, with the carrier’s Pakistan representative at the time citing economic viability concerns.
The request for renewed air links comes as Pakistan seeks to expand its role in regional trade and transit connectivity. During his address to the Belt and Road Summit, Jam Kamal highlighted Pakistan’s links with Central Asia, western China and international markets.
In an official statement issued after the September 11 meeting, the Pakistani government said John Lee appreciated the commerce minister’s summit address, particularly his emphasis on international cooperation, connectivity and shared economic prosperity. Lee also thanked Pakistan for its role in promoting peace and regional stability, according to the statement.

Jam Kamal separately met Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau. Discussions included business delegation exchanges, aviation connectivity and cooperation in finance, services and trade.

The minister’s Hong Kong visit formed part of Pakistan’s participation in the 11th Belt and Road Summit, where he held meetings with political and business representatives to promote trade and investment opportunities. Earlier official reporting said Pakistan was using the summit to present its trade, investment and connectivity potential to international participants.
The latest Pakistan-Hong Kong engagement comes as both sides seek to identify additional areas of mutual economic interest, with aviation connectivity emerging as one of the proposals discussed during the minister’s visit.
