CARDIFF (BBC) — September 04, 2026: Welsh actor Michael Sheen has said people in Wales should be asked whether they want to retain the Prince of Wales title in its current form when it next becomes vacant.

The title is currently held by Prince William, who received it from King Charles III in 2022 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The title is traditionally given by the monarch to the heir apparent and does not automatically pass to the next person in line.

Speaking ahead of his portrayal of Welsh historical figure Owain Glyndŵr in the upcoming stage production Owain & Henry, Sheen questioned the historical meaning attached to the title.

He said the title “symbolises something that was essentially a put-down to Wales”, while acknowledging that the events behind that symbolism took place centuries ago.

“Obviously that was a long, long time ago, but these things have power still,” Sheen added.

The actor said he was not necessarily arguing that Wales should abolish the title, but believed people should have an opportunity to express their views about what should happen to it in the future.

“The Welsh people might decide that they don’t want the title Prince of Wales to come back to Wales, and they’re happy with it the way it is,” he said. “But I think it would be nice to be asked.”

The comments were made as Sheen prepares to play Owain Glyndŵr, the last Welsh-born figure to claim the title of Prince of Wales. The new production is being staged by Welsh National Theatre in partnership with Wales Millennium Centre and is scheduled to run from November 5 to 28.

Glyndŵr led a major rebellion against the rule of King Henry IV in the early 15th century and became an enduring figure in Welsh history. Sheen said his involvement in the production had encouraged him to explore the country’s history and its relationship with its national identity more deeply.

In separate comments reported this week, Sheen said he had known little about Glyndŵr while growing up in Wales because Welsh history had not been part of what he was taught at school. He described learning more about his country’s past as having significantly influenced his understanding of his own identity.

The actor said he hoped Owain & Henry would encourage audiences to engage with Welsh history and discuss questions surrounding the country’s past, identity and relationship with the British monarchy.

The historical origins of the modern royal title date back to the period following the English conquest of Wales. Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last prince of an independent Wales, was killed in 1282. In 1301, Edward I invested his son, Edward, as Prince of Wales, establishing a tradition through which the title became associated with the heir to the English and later British throne.

Owain Glyndŵr subsequently claimed the title during his rebellion against Henry IV. His legacy remains prominent in Wales, where he is commemorated through monuments, place names and cultural references.

Kensington Palace has declined to comment on Sheen’s remarks.

Sheen’s comments therefore represent his own call for consultation rather than any announced change to the royal title. The decision over who receives the Prince of Wales title ultimately rests with the reigning monarch.

Meanwhile, Owain & Henry, written by Gary Owen and co-directed by Sheen and Steffan Donnelly, will explore the historical conflict between Glyndŵr and Henry IV. Linus Roache is set to portray Henry IV, while Rakie Ayola will play Mared, Glyndŵr’s wife.
