London (Town&Country/People) — September 04, 2026: Actor Theo James has played down reports that Meghan Markle could join Netflix’s The Gentlemen for its third season, describing the speculation as “mainly a lot of hot air.”

James, who plays Eddie Horniman, the 13th Duke of Halstead, addressed the reports in an interview with Town & Country as the second season of the Guy Ritchie-created series was released on Netflix.

Asked about the possibility of Meghan Markle appearing in the series, James jokingly said, “Yes, Fergie is joining. She’ll be playing my love interest,” referring to Sarah Ferguson, the former wife of Prince Andrew. He then clarified his view of the reports, saying, “No, I think that was mainly a lot of hot air.”

James said the production was currently focused on the second season, while plans for a third season were still developing. He indicated that the series could expand into different countries, although specific story details had not yet been finalized.

The speculation surrounding Markle emerged in August after reports claimed she was being considered for a role in the third season. Subsequent reports have offered differing accounts of the status of those discussions. Reuters reported that the proposed casting had reportedly been dropped amid reported backlash, while BBC News said discussions were understood to be at an early stage and that no details about a potential role had been disclosed.

At the second-season premiere in London, James also described the reports as “a lot of rumour” when speaking to BBC News. Series writer and executive producer Matthew Read declined to confirm or deny Markle’s possible involvement, saying it was not appropriate to speculate at that stage.

Netflix has already confirmed a third season of The Gentlemen. The announcement was made before the second season premiered, with creator Guy Ritchie saying the show’s ambitions had expanded and that he was looking forward to pushing the series further.
